Khader Adnan

May 02, 2023: Khader Adnan, 45, died at an Israeli prison after 87 days of hunger strike demanding his freedom as he was held under Administrative Detention orders without charges or trial.

Adnan’s death came on the 87th day of a hunger strike which he began on February 5th, the day Israeli soldiers abducted him and kept him held without charges.

This was the 12th time Adnan had been abducted and imprisoned by Israeli forces. He spent a total of eight years of his life behind bars in Israeli military prisons — most of that time in so-called ‘administrative detention’, an illegal practice used by Israeli martial authorities to hold Palestinians for extended periods without any charges.

Israeli authorities refused to allow Khader Adnan’s wife and children to see him, even as his health condition deteriorated severely in his last days, and refused the repeated requests by Adnan’s lawyer to have him transferred out of the notoriously ill-equipped Ramla Prison clinic into a civilian hospital.

Khader Adnan, whose full name is Khader Adnan Mohammad Mousa, was considered one of the most prominent Palestinian political prisoners. He went on extended hunger strikes on five previous occasions – in 2004 for 25 days, in 2012 for 66 days, in 2015 for 56 days, in 2018 for 58 days, and in 2021 for 25 days. These repeated hunger strikes caused severe health impacts, as the body’s internal organs begin to fail after the first two weeks of a hunger strike.

Although Israeli authorities labeled Adnan, who held a bachelor’s degree in economic mathematics, as a “security threat”, they had never filed official charges against him, and held him in prison repeatedly without any charges.

While Israel claimed Adnan “refused to undergo medical tests and receive treatment”, his lawyer Jamil Al-Khatib accused Israel of deliberate medical negligence and said that he had repeatedly requested that Israeli authorities move Adnan to a civilian hospital in Israel, but the request was denied by the Israeli Prison Authority.

Palestinian political leaders say that Adnan was targeted because of his vocal and steadfast opposition to the Israeli military occupation of Palestinian land — a military occupation that is considered illegal under international law and has been condemned by multiple United Nations resolutions.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) issued a statement that “Adnan, through his six hunger strikes and martyrdom, “carried the voice of the prisoners to all parts of the world, and was able, with each hunger strike, to gain his freedom. This time, the Israeli occupation made the decision to assassinate him.”

With the death of Khader Adnan, the number of Palestinian prisoners who died in Israeli custody since 1967 has risen to 236, of whom 75 were the result of the crime of deliberate medical negligence.

This is in addition to hundreds who died months or years after they were released, due to health conditions and illness they developed in prison without receiving professional medical treatment.

The Palestinians declared a general strike across the occupied territory and called for massive processions to condemn Adnan’s death, the ongoing Israeli crimes and violations.

As for the number of prisoners who died in captivity, but whose bodies are being held by Israeli authorities, there are now 13: Anis Doula, who died in Ashkelon prison in 1980, Aziz Owaisat since 2018, Fares Baroud, Nassar Taqatqa, Bassam Al-Sayeh, who died in 2019, Saadi Al-Gharabli, and Kamal Abu Wa’ar, who died in 2020, Sami Al-Amour, who died in 2021, Daoud Al-Zubaidi, Nasser Abu Hamid and Mohammad Maher Turkman, who died in 2022 , the detainee Wadih Abu Ramoz, who died in an Israeli occupation hospital on January 28, 2023, and Khader Adnan, who succumbed in his cell in the Ramla prison clinic on May 2, 2023.

Khader Adnan, was a married father of nine children, was from Arraba town, southwest of Jenin in the northern part of the occupied West Bank. Source: IMEMC

Omar Mohammad Awadin

March 16, 2023: Omar Mohammad Awadin, 14, was shot and killed by Israeli undercover forces who invaded Jenin and killed four Palestinians, including a child and a young man who was executed while lying injured on the ground, and wounded more than 21 Palestinians, five seriously.

In a statement, the Palestinian Health Ministry said the soldiers killed Yousef Saleh Barakat Shreim, 29, Nidal Amin Zidan Khazem, 28, Omar Mohammad Awadin, 14, and Luay Khalil Zghayyar, 37.

Defense For Children International – Palestine Branch, said on its Twitter account: “Israeli special forces shot 14-year-old Omar Mohammad Omar Awadin in the back with live ammunition while he was riding his bike outside his parents’ shop around 3 p.m. today in Jenin. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Jenin Government Hospital.”

The Health Ministry added that the soldiers shot at least 21 Palestinians, including four who suffered life-threatening wounds.

The Ministry said 12 Palestinians who were shot with live fire, including four who suffered serious wounds, were rushed to the Ar-Razi Hospital, five were moved to Jenin governmental hospital, six, including one who was seriously injured and one who was rammed by an army jeep, were moved to Ibn Sina Specialized Hospital.

One of the wounded Palestinians, a child named Ahmad Farahna, will be transferred to the Al-Maqasid hospital in Jerusalem, due to the seriousness of his wounds.

Eyewitnesses said undercover Israeli soldiers infiltrated the center of Jenin city and executed the Palestinians, as many army vehicles invaded the area and started firing dozens of live rounds at the Palestinians and surrounding homes and properties.

A video from the scene shows an undercover soldier executing the seriously wounded Nidal Amin Khazem by shooting him a live round in the head, even though he was already lying flat on his stomach, motionless and unconscious.

Palestinian medics tried to reach Nidal, but the soldiers did not allow them through before the undercover officer executed him.

There has been a serious increase of cases where Israeli soldiers have executed Palestinians, including in January of this year, 2023, when the soldiers killed Ahmad Kahala, 45, a father of five, from point-blank range with two live rounds in the neck near a military roadblock under Yabrud bridge, east of the central West Bank city of Ramallah.

A similar incident occurred on December 2, 2022, in Huwwara town, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus, when the soldiers executed Ammar Hamdi Mifleh, 22, while he was lying on the ground. After shooting Ammar on the ground once, the soldier then fired a total of four times again. Ammar was unarmed and was lying on the ground when he was shot.

After concluding its offensive in Jenin, the Israeli army said it had carried out a joint operation with the undercover forces and intelligence officers, adding that one of the Palestinians, Nidal Amin Khazem, was a senior fighter of the Al-Quds Brigades of the Islamic jihad, and was “behind serious attacks against Israeli targets.”

The army claimed that the soldiers “neutralized a Palestinian who tried to throw a large iron object on the army, ” and stated that the soldiers “fired live rounds at Palestinian fighters who engaged in a fire exchange with the soldiers,” and said “its operations will continue to ensure Israel’s security.”

March 8, 2023: Sufian Adnan Ismail Fakhouri, 26, was one of three men killed by Israeli forces in a targeted assassination as the three men were driving in a car Thursday morning in the town of Jaba, south of Jenin.

The attack follows a massive invasion of Jenin and Jenin refugee camp the previous day, during which Israeli troops killed six Palestinian men and wounded 26 Palestinian civilians using sharpshooters on rooftops and aerial bombardment. No Israelis were wounded.

A seventh Palestinian died of his wounds on Thursday after having been wounded during the Wednesday invasion.

Tariq Ziyad Natour

March 07, 2023: Tariq Ziyad Mustafa Natour, 27, was one of six Palestinians shot and killed by Israeli troops during a massive invasion of the northern West Bank Palestinian city of Jenin, as well as invading the Jenin refugee camp on the outskirts of the city.

The soldiers killed six Palestinian men, ranging in age from 22 – 49 years old. Those killed by the invading Israeli forces were identified as Mohammad Wael Ghazzawi (26 years) from Jenin camp, Tariq Ziyad Mustafa Natour (27 years) from Jenin, Ziyad Amin Al-Zar’ini (29 years) from Jenin, and Abdel-Fattah Hussein Kharousha (49 years) from the Askar camp in Nablus, Mutasem Nasser Sabbagh (22 years) from the Jenin camp, and Muhammad Ahmed Salim Khallouf (22 years) from the town of Burqin in the Jenin governorate.

In addition, 26 Palestinian civilians were wounded by Israeli forces, who shot live ammunition towards crowds of demonstrators who were throwing stones at the invading soldiers. Three of those wounded had injuries that were described as critical.

According to the Palestinian Wafa News Agency, Israeli forces fired at least one missile toward a building in Jenin refugee camp, and columns of smoke were seen rising from the building. In addition, the Israeli military deployed dozens of snipers on the roofs of commercial and residential buildings in Jenin and Jenin refugee camp, firing at Palestinians on the ground.

This is the third such invasion targeting Palestinians in the northern West Bank in the past three months. On the twenty-second of February, Israeli occupation forces committed a massacre in the city of Nablus, which resulted in the death of 11 Palestinians, including a child and 3 elders, and the injury of more than 102 others.

And on the 26th of January, the Israeli occupation forces committed a massacre in the city of Jenin and the Jenin refugee camp, during which 9 Palestinians were killed, including an elderly woman, and 20 Palestinians were injured.

The Palestinian Liberation Movement, Fatah, issued a statement condemning what they termed another Israeli massacre in Jenin. They stated that this attack only affirms their steadfast commitment to ending the Israeli military occupation of Palestine, and to establishing a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. The statement mourned the deaths of the men killed in Jenin Tuesday, and called for an escalation of resistance against the Israeli occupation, its army and its paramilitary settlers.

The movement stated that this barbaric aggression reflects the bloody approach of the beleaguered occupation government, which seeks, through the shedding of the blood of the Palestinian people, to export its internal crises, stressing that the Israeli occupation and its paramilitary settlers will be held accountable for their continuous crimes against the Palestinian people.

The reference to Israel’s ‘internal crises’ refers to the fact that the current Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is under indictment for corruption, and protesters have called for his resignation.
