Khaled Maher Nofal

February 5th, 2021: Khaled Maher Nofal, 34, was shot and killed by a paramilitary illegal Israeli colonialist settler near the central West Bank city of Ramallah, after he reportedly attempted to break into a house.

According to the Israeli military, Khaled, who was unarmed, attempted to break into a home in the illegal Sadeh Ephraim colony, which was installed on privately-owned Palestinian lands.

The army also claimed that, at about 3:45 in the morning, the Palestinian drove his car fast through a field, and stopped in front of a house at the edge of the colony, and allegedly tried to enter through a locked door.

It added that a guard woke up and began a physical confrontation with the man before another guard shot and killed him.

Radi Abu Fkheitha, the head of Ras Karkar Village Council, said the army informed the family Khaled Maher Nofal, 34, that he was shot and killed, and accompanied his father, Maher, and his brother, Mohammad, to the scene to identify him and his bloody clothes.

It is worth mentioning that Khaled is a married father of a boy, only four years of age, and works at the Palestinian Finance Ministry.

He was near the ar-Reesan Mountain, which was recently illegally confiscated by Israeli colonists who established the Sde Ephraim colony on the stolen Palestinian lands.

After the man was shot, Palestinian medics rushed to the area, but the soldiers prevented them from reaching him, and took his corpse away.

His family denied the Israeli allegations, and said that the guard or the soldiers did not have to deliver fatal shots, especially since he was unarmed, and could have been easily arrested.

They added that their son was executed in cold blood, and that the soldiers confiscated his car, in addition to invading and ransacking the family’s home and interrogated them.

“He just went to check on his land in the ar-Reesan Mountain where Israeli has been trying to illegally annex the lands of the Palestinians in the area for its colonialist activities,” the family stated, “He owns dozens of Dunams of lands there.”

They added that the soldiers fired several live rounds at the car, and then repeatedly assaulted Sobar, including hitting him with rifle-butts, inflicting serious wounds, but did not attempt to abduct him or move him to an Israeli medical center.

Palestinian medics were called to the scene and provided the seriously wounded young man with vital first aid before rushing him to Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah.

Initial reports indicated that the young man was shot in his car, but eyewitnesses confirmed he was not injured by the bullets, but instead, all his wounds were inflicted by the soldiers who brutally assaulted him.

Dr. Ahmad al-Bitwati, the head of Ramallah Medical Complex in Ramallah, told Palestine TV that Snobar was not shot, but died as a result of injuries sustained from an attack by Israeli forces.

“There were visible signs of beatings on Snobar’s neck,” Bitawi said.

The medical center also confirmed reported that the injuries to Snobar’s neck were consistent with being beaten with the butts of Israeli soldiers’ rifles.

Al-Bitawi added that the Palestinian was already dead when the Palestinian ambulance arrived at the medical center.

Furthermore, Defense for Children International (DCI)- Palestine Branch said Snobar was helping his 17-year-old friend move his broken-down car near the village of Turmus Ayya, located northeast of Ramallah when Israeli forces arrived at the scene.

It added that the friend managed to flee on foot to some nearby trees where he became an eyewitness to Snobar’s killing. Snobar was surrounded by Israeli forces and placed in a chokehold before being beaten and killed by Israeli forces, according to the eyewitness. Snobar was later transferred by ambulance to a Ramallah hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Israeli army claimed that the soldiers fired live rounds at the Palestinian car after the driver reportedly tried to ram them, and that the soldiers “neutralized the threat,” a term Israel and various Israeli media outlets frequently use when the soldiers fatally shoot a Palestinian.

His family denied the military allegations and said the man lost control of his car after Israeli colonialist settlers opened fire at it.

The slain man was identified as Fadi Adnan Sarhan Samara, 37, a father of five children, including an infant (two months of age) from Abu Qash village, north of Ramallah.

He worked in Israel and had returned back home to Nabi Saleh to celebrate the Muslim feast of al-Fitr with his family.

His brothers stated that he left his home in the evening heading to az-Zawiya village, west of Salfit in central West Bank, to fetch his wife and children and bring them back home, as they were visiting her family there.

The Israeli army claimed that Fadi tried to ram soldiers with his car near a natural spring in the Ramallah governorate. He was shot in the leg and was left to bleed for about an hour,  without any first aid.

But Palestinian media outlets and residents in the area said that Fadi lost control of his car when illegal Israeli colonialist settlers, who repeatedly invade the area, opened fire at his car, before the soldiers fired a barrage of live rounds at it, claiming that he was attempting to ram them.
